Rana Azul, or Blue Frog, restaurant is located at the end of Almirante Bay inside a reef, which must be accessed and navigated through a very narrow opening that tests the draft of Away at 5ft, 9 inches. The restaurant is named after the unusual frogs that inhabit the area. Different islands have different types of very small frogs, red, green, and blue in color.
Rana Azul is one of the most improbable restaurants and places that we have ever been. The only access is by water, and it has an extremely remote feel to it, including howler monkeys that live up to their names, especially at 3AM. It's eerie.
Rana Azul is owned by Joseph and Maria, a couple from Austria, and they serve Austrian food and also make some of the best pizzas, cooked in earthen wood fired ovens, we have ever had.
They are open only on Friday afternoon and Sundays starting at noon. Keep in mind that it's almost 15 miles by water to the nearest store of any kind, including groceries, and that all of the loyal clientele must also arrive by water, some traveling from Bocas del Toro, a distance of about 15 miles.
Joseph and Maria also make great garlic soup, and excellent desserts and after dinner apertif's, all of this set in an open jungle environment with flags adorning the ceiling, a generator creating electricity, great music, and lots of conservation among the guests.
Can one imagine this place? We think you have to see it to believe it. :-)
