First Training in October

Trainings are in either the UK or Sydney Australia. I opted for the UK and so journeyed to Gosport, England for my Level 1 training. It was quite interesting as there were 11 on our boat, 5 of who had never sailed before. From all walks of life: Medical, Financial, IT, Construction, Media, and law and countries: UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Boston and of course Austin. The training reminded me of Freshman Summer Band Camp. The freshman trying to figure out which foot to put forward when, the sophomores encouraging them, the Juniors helping with some hands on info and the Seniors (actually the instructors) working to mold all of us together. I was scrambling to learn BIG boat ways and think Clipper 70 rather than J22 or SC21. So, I also had lots to learn. Impressive though was the bonding through teamwork and working together to learn to achieve a common goal. AWESOME time. Below is our Level 1 group and as you can see all ages. Yes Lucy you were the youngest and I was the oldest.

How did it happen?

After a year of checking their website and seeing the adventures and the theme of Teamwork being the most important part of the race, my mind was still intrigued.

Hmmmmm

Looking like a pretty big boat and interest piqued, once the race started I started watching it's progress on the internet. www.clipperroundtheworld.com. Wow a race around the world!

How did this all start?

IN the Summer of 2013 I was over in London to visit some former students and the son of a British POW who had been in one of my Dad's WWII Japanese POW camps. One afternoon when just wandering around, I came across an interesting scene on Trafalgar Square. It captured my attention so went over and talked to a young man about it. He told me about an adventure he was about to depart on. The 2013-14 Clipper Round the World race. He had never been on a sailboat prior to the trainings he went through and was really excited because he did not have the dread seasickness that lots of the crew dealt with. He was doing the whole race and was excited to get started. Sounds interesting I thought. I had always wanted to sail around the world but never by myself.

The Beginning of the Saga

This is not quite the beginning but will be the question we all need to ask.

Soooo, when we had the board retreat for the Genevieve and Ward Orsinger Foundation and the decision was to continue on in perpetuity rather than spend down, I asked if we could hire someone to take ccare of the San Antonio office. The decision was made to hire an Executive Director and I was asked if I could let go and back off a bit. I said I would think of something and when I got home I checked on the 2013-14 Clipper race as it was almost at the finish and guess what! In big bold print on the site was a link APPLY HERE for 2015-16 Clipper Round the World Race. so, I clicked the link and signed up. Had the interview a few days later and was on my way to begin preparations for the adventure.

Hmmmmm
