Bonding
07 December 2014 | Waitomo Caves
Colin
One of the activities planned for Jessie and Grant's visit was a guided cave tour in the Waitomo Caves, south of Aukland and near Rotorua. This was billed as subterranean inner tubing in glow worm caves. Sounds easy-peasy right? Well... we did float on inner tubes for a bit and we did see glow worms... But this was not the garden path cave tour I envisioned, with pleasant backlighting and conveniently placed hand rails. No, it turns out this was Xtreme caving with 6mm wet suits, rushing cold water up to the sweet bits and beyond, tight passages and difficult footing. We belly crawled through holes, squeezed through cracks, slid over little water falls and swam through deep spots. In short, we had a blast!! Our guides were great; knowledgeable, funny and very helpful. The caves really were quite interesting and beautiful. The glow worms were cool too. And what a wonderful opportunity for a little Mother-Daughter bonding!
