Rescue at Sea
22 February 2013 | Dewey harbor--Culebra
Douglas Paddock
We left Salinas Del Sur this a.m. and actually had nice weather for a change. Shocking...just the right amount of wind and small well organized seas. Made us wonder if we were still in Puerto Rico. First nice sail we've had in ages.
On the way here, Meyka noticed the float marking a lobster pot. I adjusted course to miss it and looked ahead for more. I thought I saw a flag marking a fish trap and steered to avoid it. As we drew close, Meyka exclaimed, "It's somebody! It's a diver!"
He had inflated his rescue signal and was crying for help. We kicked Banjo out of autopilot. Furled the jib and stalled the main by steering into the wind. He was able to swim to us and I dropped the ladder and got him aboard.
I guess that he had been spearfishing with his father and brother and was swept away. They obviously were looking for him because once they saw us stop they pulled aside. "Thank you...thank you...thank you," they all repeated. He was seven miles offshore from Culebra and it would have been almost impossible to find him. I'm grateful we saw the lobster pot or we might have missed him, too.
Exciting stuff!
We are in the harbor at Dewey, Culebra. There are a ton of boats here. It is the first time I've been in a crowded anchorage for months. I'm ready to go now! Seriously, we will enjoy hanging out here for a couple of days. We need eggs, bread, and veggies, too. Plus we know several folks in the anchorage. Some we've known since the Bahamas.
It was beautiful to see the three islands of Vieques, Culebra, and St. Thomas as we traveled here. St. Thomas is approximately 20 miles away.
Never boring on Banjo, for the crew or K-9 Wally !
