Sociable !!
25 August 2011 | Liverpool, NS
Alex, sunny and blue skies
We left Carter's Beach (sadly !!) this morning hoping to get to the Brooklyn Marina, Liverpool bright and early (by lunchtime) and get a spot before the high winds started. We did just that, leaving very becalmed waters, and having ourselves a motor around the point right into the marina, where the winds were clocked in again at 20 knots. We did see our first sign of real sea life (other than seals), three fins splashing through the water, and few blowspouts, and even the hump of a whale. Tres cool, but not picture worthy, sadly !! The wildlife most prominnent on this trip, has been birds.
We had a nice afternoon visiting with Rita, and Aaron, Dave's son, who was up here working for his mom, who iss renovating and converting the ole Morrisey Hotel. We walked into the little cafe for lunch, and being 4 feet away from the counter, the lady placed a huge blackboard sign saying "kitchen is closed at 3:00". We looked at our watch: it was 3:01. So off we went to the Inn, and had ourselves a light lunch (supper?) on the patio. Pricey for fish and chips and seafood chowder. Funny for a province chock full of fish and maritime flavour, how the prices of seafood can be so pricey, the ruin of the tourism industry, for sure. However a nice time, to be sure.
We met up with some old friends of Dave's from the Navy, who were anchored at Carter's Beach, and sailed in behind us here in Liverpool. Funny how you meet people in the oddest places, makes me smile to think that really, the one word that would describe this August get-a-way of ours, has been primarily to learn the boat, but that's not part of my ruminations here, the highlight of this trip has been the people we've crossed paths with. We have crossed paths with friends, made new friends, met old friends, talked to people watching life go by under the shade of an apple tree, learned about the fisherment from the fishermen, practiced being even more "sociable". Now that's easier said that done, sometimes, as one comes into an anchorage with 3 other boats there. How do you go out there, and say hello. Well you just do. Smile and say hello. And that's how it all starts.
We will sit out this wind and coming rain, and leave bright and early tomorrow morning heading for LaHave, hoping to hunker in there somewhere and ride out whatever winds and rain Hurricane Irene may bring up here. And then we continue our trek home (sadly !!) as someone has to head back to work in a week and a bit.
