We woke up to a rolly polly anchorage, the howling winds were well, howling... and blowing and hard, the waters were getting churned and we were getting bounced around but good, which had us questioning our choices and options for the day.
We were initially planning to stay another day and go for another hike on Cumberland Island, however, the bouncy-ness and the weather reports didn't quite favour that option. We raised anchor and got outta there and headed up the River towards (hopefully) more protected waters in St-Mary's.
We saw some clusters of white birds on the shores of the marshlands, and sometimes in the trees... could it be pelicans ?
Binoculars confirmed that they did look like white pelicans ?? Strangely they're always in groups along the shores or in the trees and we've never seen any flying around.
And so I found out that white pelicans are migratory birds, (another version of the Snowbird perhaps?), unlike the brown pelicans, which are year-round residents of Florida.
It was nice to stretch our legs as we walked through the town of St-Mary's
stopping in at the various shops, the people oh so friendly, all offering up some tastings !! We walked away with a thick slab of Chocolate Pecan Fudge, best I've ever had !!
This is where the famous cruisers Thanksgiving happens, where the town donates turkeys and hams etc, and all cruisers bring a potluck dish, an event that has grown to last 4 days.
And the Christmas Wreaths are up ?
Our initial plan was to just stay and enjoy the coming week, enjoy the Thanksgiving festivities and reunite with many of the cruisers we have met along the way that were all planning to stop here.
However, things being what they are, combined with the weather forecast, we once again decided to raise anchor and head out...
