One thing about going to bed early, you sure do wake up early.
But it's also great for getting through the bridges before their hour long closure to allow for morning rush-hour traffic.
So today had us motoring along some very long and straight and narrow parts of the ICW (was that Hoover's fault again?"), one area was notably named "Mosquito Lagoon". No evidence of mosquitos however perhaps this pelican knows something we don't ?
The very tall red lighthouse of Ponce de Leon inlet was visible off in the distance (it stands 159 feet tall and it's the tallest lighthouse in Florida).
And then, finally, the turn for Haulover Canal. Incredibly the 3 foot canal was originally hand dug by slaves. Hand dug !! Today it's a tad deeper thanks to the Army Corps of Engineers.
We barely waited minutes for the Haulover Bridge to open, and once more we were on our way... but, would you believe, "stuck in traffic" for a while. Sometimes we have a hard time understanding why people choose to fish in the middle of a channel, and also, had us wishing that some people had rear-view mirrors !! Would it be polite to use a horn?
It was an OK run today, almost 50 nm in not even 7 hours, however most of it going against some current and most of it in the typical Conga-type-line of fellow cruisers making the daily jumps to get further South. The skies threatened rain a few times, yet it was always "just off in the distance". Nice.
Given we'd left early, we reached Titusville early, and first order of business before picking up our mooring ball was some diesel. Once on our mooring, we prepped dinghy, if nothing else to ensure that after almost 3 weeks of inactivity, she was still good to go... and go she did. Zoom-zoomed right into the dinghy dock, where a nice resident told us that we really shouldn't drive "so fast" (fast ?), the cops might stop us and ticket us. Really ? Ya, seriously !! We wanted to tell him we just came from Daytona ! However, we did appreciate his letting us know what the code of conduct was in this area... we are visitors after all.
Look what was going on in downtown Titusville today.. the Food Truck Wars !!
The main road was closed to traffic, and Food Trucks lined the streets, competing for prizes and awards, and the food smells are what got our stomachs seriously growling for some grub!
This was a food fest beyond belief,
and we found ourselves feasting (and dare I say?), yes, SHARING : a bowl of "award winning" clam chowder, followed by an "award winning" hot buttered lobster on a toasted roll.
Then it was off in search for just a bit of something else, although we easily got sidetracked by the smells, as you can well imagine,
and we found it in a truck serving up some English Style Battered Haddock and Fries. Just what our tummies needed, some good ole fashioned grease !!
We ate sitting on the curb listening to some amazing jazzy tunes,
and a beer or two; all proceeds going to the SPCA. (And look, they even had a Food Truck for the pooches).
Not only were the food trucks waging war with each other for best prizes, but the rain clouds were battling it out with the night skies, and raindrops and lightning threatened.
We made it home nice and dry and bellies full - what more can you ask for ?
