The winds and seas were kind of rough "on the outside" so we opted to stay a second day in Lake Worth, and since we didn't quite like our anchor spot (possibly too close to a cable crossing that we didn't pay all that much attention to when we anchored in the dark the night before - oops !) we figured we best raise anchor during daylight hours, and go a few minutes away, and who do we see there, but Serendipity ! A huge hello was waved and we anchored just up from them.
After a few morning chores, we had a nice lunch and headed to visit Peanut Island, and Island just at the mouth of Lake Worth Inlet.
In 1918 an island was created from the material excavated when Lake Worth Inlet was created, and they called it Inlet Island. The Island was (is) used as a spoil site for the continued maintenance of the ICW and inlet.
It started out being only 10 acres in size, and it was (is) still used as a spoil site for the continued maintenance of the ICW and Inlet, and now it is up to 80 acres large ! The outer edges have become a park, and we noticed campsites, walking trails, snorkeling reef (damn, we could've brought our mask and snorkel!!) and of course, it being the weekend, everyone was out and about.
So why Peanut Island ? The Island was used as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. This stopped after 1945, but the name was kept.
It was also used as a nuclear bunker (which was built in secret) President John F Kennedy, shortly after his election in 1960. The shelter is now open to visitors (approx $12 per person !) to go view the bunker.
So a great walk, that would've been made better had we had our snorkel's in order to swim with the fishies :)
We dinghied back to Banyan, dodging the many Sherrif's that were out and about,
and enjoyed a great dinner with Serendipity.
We engaged our cloaking device to dinghy home so as to avoid any potential stops by the patrol boats, as we weren't quite legit ! By legit we mean the dinghy should carry at all times : PFD's for all onboard, proper lights, whistle (sound device)... you know the drill !!
