Oh, the Winds in the Anchorage sounded quite frightful (and before we started humming a Christmas tune to this)...
"Let's head to the Beach" we said!!
We're in the Southern end of Martinique, well known (
world famous) for its beautiful beaches, so it was a must do to go exploring, right? We met up with friends on
Izzy R and decided to go check one of them (some of them??) out.
It was a wee bit of a
hash (or so we told ourselves as it was our Grenadian Routine to hash on Saturdays and well, why break with tradition??) and so we walked through the small town of Ste Anne to get to the signs that pointed us towards the beach trails.
Just a slight uphill pace on the paved road until it hit the expanse of park, where we continued on,
following the well marked hiking signs,
through some pretty unique parts,
and before you knew it, we were at such a beautiful stretch of beach, that we just had to stop,
and spend the rest of the afternoon floating in the crystal clear, sandy bottom, oh so warm waters. Sharing stories, basking in the sun, shielded by the fierce winds and life was pretty darn grand, especially with the surprise (a nice Bordeaux in white sippy cups brought by Jeff and Izzy). Thanks!
A horrific scream ensued and we all almost jumped out of the water, and what followed was a tall tale of toe eating creatures in epic proportions. I think Dave may be a little worried about getting back in,
with such a fierce creature on the loose, however, I think the little baby crab might have more to worry about than Dave!!
This little (closed) beach hut says it all, "un ti-coin de paradis"
which loosely translated means
a small corner of paradise! We couldn't agree more.
On the other side of town, there's another beach, nearer the Club Med facilities. That ended up being a short(er) walk past the cemetery and down the hill towards the never-ending music.
There were crowds of people milling about, under the tents, and we learned the
Transmartinique 2013 event was finishing up, and we helped cheer on some of the participants who were walking, running, and yes, even limping back towards the finish line. Awesome feats of accomplishments to all !!
We had been curious about the helicopters we'd been hearing (and seen) hovering around for the past two days, and have since read on the news, that one of the participants disappeared on one of the trails.
The beachfront held a few vendors selling their accras and burgers and beer, and well, you know we just had to stop to sample.
I think Dave approves !! The bière Lorraine is produced here, and you know what, we didn't even blink twice at this little guy dancing about our feet...
I can just imagine some native Arawark Indians pushing this impressive canoe off the beach, towards freedom or fishing grounds, the oars silently gliding through these perfect blue waters,
or like this seemingly forgotten one, tied to a tree.
The crabs are fun to spot, and watch as they hop skip and jump from rock to rock,
and then it was time to head back home,
to our anchorage where the winds were still howling and blowing a stink !!
