Public Blog Translation Announcement
29 April 2014 | Any of the French Caribbean Islands
Alex, HOT !!
In the vicinity of many of the Caribbean French Islands, VHF 16 regular announces the following:
"Appel à tous, appel à tous, appel à tous.
Ici le CROSS Antilles-Guyane.
Ici le CROSS AG, (said one word), CROSS AG, CROSS AG, qui va diffuser le bulletin marine côtier pour la Guadeloupe..."
Being fully bilingual (even trilingual) and somewhat and sometimes having an ear prone to distinguish the message from the accent, I still couldn't figure out the words for myself for the longest time. I've recently been asked several times about this message and thought it might be a good idea to post, so voilà...
CROSS is an acronym for Centre Regional Opérationnel de Surveillance et de Sauvetage.
In English: SAR (Search and Rescue).
The AG an acronym for Antilles-Guyane.
In English: West Indies - Guiana.
And so the whole blurb loosely translates to the following:
"All stations, all stations, all stations.
This is the CROSS AG (Search and Rescue for West Indies-Guiana) who will broadcast the coastal marine news (weather) for Guadeloupe..."
Sailing Banyan, Over and Out.
