Day trip to Coimbra
15 September 2017 | Figueira Da Foz, Portugal
Today we took the train to Coimbra which is about an hour east of Fig. da Foz. and has a preserved medieval town. This was a well worthwhile trip to get a sense that there is something of substance a mile beyond the water's edge. When you are sailing it is easy to think that the world stops at the shore and it is good to push yourself to go inland from time to time. Coimbra was a fun and busy place. Quite touristique with many visitors from many countries. How come (again) we have never heard of it? It seemed to attract various buskers playing in the street. The accordion player was not particularly good but the very fact that he was playing with a dog on his shoulder earned a contribution from many passers-by. We visited the old cathedral with its lovely cloisters, the new cathedral, the Roman crypt under the museum, the steep narrow streets with the Republicas (student accommodation covered in graffiti) and the university. This is Portugal's equiv. of Cambridge or Oxford. The students attend class in black gowns. Today was matriculation day so there seemed to be some sort of freshers event in progress - all in black gowns. And then after many miles walked we took the train home to F. da. F.. and back to Barracuda for supper onboard. Tomorrow we think we will head south if the wind has calmed down a bit (been blowing hard today).
