5 days to go - Progress is being made
14 November 2017 | Las Palmas, Canary Islands
Great achievements today:
1) our bottled water was ordered and arrived. Now, where are we going to store 42 x 5-litre bottles?
2) we re-fuelled, including filling up our jerry-cans. Quite difficult to find a space at the fuel pontoon, in this busy marina.
3) Jon the engineer has fixed our water-maker. Three cheers! Only a minor leak in our heater fuel pipe to fix but we don't really need the heater now for a while - we hope.
Discoveries today:
1) at night we sometimes hear a great splashing and commotion in the water around the boat. We have now found out what it is and - wait for it - it's a BARRACUDA, attacking the shoals of fish that graze contentedly on the weed growth on the bottoms of boats.
2) a shoal of fish have been cleaning the bottom of the boat and from what we can see they are doing a great job - three cheers for the wee fish - hope the barracuda does not get you.
3) three boats down have an infestation of cockroaches - there is now a big pile of our shoes on the pontoon that are not allowed back onto the boat until disinfected.
Barracuda had a visit from our pal Stuart, from Ocean Chandlery, who sold us our ParaSailor and came round to see how we were doing. Also, a lovely surprise visit today from Anders and Lena S/Y Space, with their friend Ronnie. A very good hour was passed with them and some fine Oban malt was consumed before lunch. We decided not to do mast-climbing practice this afternoon.
The focus now is on packing everything away and thinking about how to turn the loaded-up boat into a sailing machine, after nearly two weeks in port where we and the boat seem to get fatter :-)
