Ko Pu
05 December 2017
Fortunately the wind eased overnight but at 7.30 the local dive boat wanted the mooring we had used so we quickly re-anchored. As the surf would be bad all the way up the coast we decided to make the most of the floating pontoon and go ashore here and get a taxi to the supermarket. As this was a very upmarket resort when we went into the village we found the prices hugely inflated compared to the other Thai resorts. We got our essential stores of ground coffee and were back to the boat 2 hours later to lift anchor and head off.
The wind had dropped so much that when we tried to sail we only managed 2knts for several hours and had eventually to turn the motor back on. Alistair had a go at fishing as I had been unsuccessful with my lures and the line did scream out at one point and Alistair was sure it was a fish but unfortunately it did not stay on the line long enough. We had been recommended a new island to try called Ko Pu which was really in quite shallow water. We arrived by 3.15 and anchored opposite what looked like a beach restaurant. The black clouds covered the sky and the radar showed a band of heavy rain about to hit us. We put on all the covers but it seemed the heavy rain was in front of us and behind us and we only got enough spots of rain to keep us cool.
We went ashore cautiously as there were coral and rocky outcrops all along the beach but managed to land safely without getting too wet. It looks a really nice island with a several bungalow resorts with a few European visitors at each and I will definitely be back to investigate this island more. We had a pleasant walk along the beach for nearly 2 miles when we stopped for a beer while the rain was a little heavier then back to the restaurant opposite the boat. Alistair ordered a fried fish with 3 herbs but unfortunately it was a fish steak that had been in the freezer and half of it was still frozen when we got it. We duly returned and enjoyed the other dishes we had ordered. A little wet returning to the boat but we got through the surf safely.
