VERY COLD IN FAIRBANKS ALASKA

03 January 2009 | I'm in Philippines! :)

This is what -52 below zero looks like in Fairbanks!!!!! I'm pretty sure Global Warming hasn't made it to Alaska yet.... Burrrrrrr!!!

I'm trying to get the Fairbanks webcam to appear here as well, but it's not working YET! You can click on the Link to the RIGHT-->> FAIRBANKS WEBCAM to see what WINTER really is like (Not for the faint at heart!!!)

Note: this kinda weather is what keeps the population down in the INTERIOR of Alaska!!! Summers are pretty nice, but in the winter....if you don't like wearing long-underwear all the time: outside, inside or in bed.... Fairbanks might not be your next HOME! Since Fairbanks is situated in a huge bowl, the air quality becomes some of the WORST in the nation!!! Cars are left running, wood stoves and fire places are going 24/7, and the power plants are pumping at near max capacity. All of this pollution settles down in the extra cold 'bowl' and becomes this Ice-Smog, making driving treacherous not to mention bad for people with health problems. Fairbanks has some of the TOUGHEST people I know and some pretty crazy ones as well!!! You just might have to be both to call Fairbanks HOME! :) I'm pretty sure I'll move back there full time... after I complete my sailing dream! Last word.... BURRRRRRRRR!

It's soooooo nice to be in the Philippines right now! It's in the 90's AGAIN today with more of the same PRETTY MUCH EVERYDAY! :) The nights are the most comfortable time here in Zamboanga, usually in the 70's.

Here's to staying warm!

Here's a few shots of prepping the boat for the long ride NORTH to Gig Harbor, Wa. It took about 5 hours to prep and load her up.

Here's a few shots of my 1985 28 foot Bristol Channel Cutter (BCC) built in Vancouver, BC. She's a full keel fiberglass hull with teak and mahogany wood throughout. She's powered by a Volvo 28hp diesel.

I had a great day learning how to sail my BCC. The learning curve was a little steeper than I had anticipated. The day ended pretty crappy... I couldn't get the engine out of gear and I plowed into the back side of a large powerboat in the slip next to me. OUCH!

This was the first day on board Junessa. I looked in every corner on board and climbed to the top of the mast! I had Chinese food and Corona Beer then feel asleep to some beautiful candle light and music.
