I had some awesome sunsets along my trip North! It was so peaceful sitting on deck and watch the sun go down...I could hear the Eagles calling and other unique sounds as the tide changed. I did hear wolves one night... very neat experience!

06/19/2009, INSIDE PASSAGE

Taken 5/22/09

This was such a cool spot to spend the night!!! I had the whole bay to myself (like 99% of the places I stopped!). The light was magnificent!!

I tried my luck at fishing here, but only caught a bunch of crappies under the dock.

I woke to 38'F or 3'C temps and fog! Brrrrrrrrr!!!

LOG ALERT!

I was able to spot floating logs a ways off when the birds were using them as a rest spots! Otherwise, I had a hard time seeing the logs until I was right on top of them... Not a good feeling!

SUBJECTS EVERYWHERE I LOOKED
Rick 17902
06/16/2009, Somewhere along the Inside Passage

I could spend years with my camera and tripod here! Everywhere I turned, another subject to photograph!!! My only problem is that I'm ALWAYS in a rush..... I really need to S-L-O-W D-O-W-N and enjoy everything around me.

I've read alot of cruising books and articles and they all say "Schedules and Cruising DON'T MIX!" and I'm going to agree! Schedules force you to push the weather, push the equipment and push your ability to make good decisions because of fatigue. I was very lucky in my trip NORTH! I didn't have any major breakdowns, accidents or storms to contend with.

The trip SOUTH will be at a much slower pace. I plan to do more hikes and more photography. I'm thinking of avoiding the marines as well and anchoring in remote anchorages. We'll see.....

VERY LARGE TIDES
Rick 16685
06/04/2009, PETERSBURG, AK

Some crazy tides here in Petersburg!!! The tide is out now, but when it comes in, all this is under water!!! Look at the poles by the boats! wow!!

Since the tides can run 10-15 feet or more, you can imagine the currents can get pretty strong!! I remember seeing the huge bouys being pulled underwater because of the fast currents!! Luckly I timed most of my legs to either run with the tides or minimize the strongest currents.

I'm still amazed at the early explorers!!! How did they get around up here??? No motor, slow ships, little to no charts, and bad weather!! They had some huge kahoonas!!!

NORWEGIAN TOWN
RIck 16240
06/01/2009, PETERSBURG, AK

It's sooooooo good to be back in this little fishing town! Everything here is on a different speed... granny gear! No stoplights, no traffic, people are walking and bike riding! I could get used to this place!!!

I did some work on JUNESSA yesterday and plan to do some varnishing today after my tour of the big island (I rented a car).

I didn't sleep as well as I thought lastnight... I guess my mind was still racing at 100mph (or in my case 6 knots!!!) The room did not want to stop moving either... I must have been on a waterbed!!! hahahah

I'll keep pasting more pics and videos and updating the blogs already posted. I just love to tell a story with pictures more than words so I just posted as much as I could all at once.

Time to go find some more Halibut beer-bits!! YUMMY!

You can check out the Petersburg webcam over there on the right hand side of this page under FAVORITES... It's another beautiful day here in Southeast Alaska!!!!!

I MADE IT TO PETERSBURG ALASKA!
RIck 16040
05/31/2009, S.E. ALASKA

I DID IT!!!!!!!!! I MADE IT TO PETERSBURG ALASKA!!!!!!
THIS WAS MY DREAM FOR SO LONG.... TO SAIL ALL THE WAY UP TO THIS SMALL FISHING TOWN THAT MY FAMILY LIVED AT IN 1978-79!

I have so many great memories of this place! It was such a great place to grow-up as a kid!

My timing for transiting the Narrows was off by an hour... :( I had a running tide with me all the way, but I arrived in Petersburg with a 2.3 knot current and 15 mph wind! I tried to head into my slip but had to crab almost 50 degrees to go in a straight line toward my slip.... 50 degrees the wrong way! So, the harbormaster was very accommodating and let me take an outside slip with lots of room until the next slack tide.

I ended up walking around the town for an hour and had some Halibut beer-bits and fries... yum yum!!!! Then checked into the Beach Comber Inn for a shower! :) I've been uploading pics way too long! I'm starving and it's 8:30pm on a Sunday... I'll probably be eating a brat burrito on the boat again...

I love sharing my experience, I only wish I had a better way of uploading... I'll work on it for next trip.

Here's to HOT SHOWERS AND BEER-BITS!

CHRISTMAS CHANNEL?????
RIck 16040
05/31/2009, WRANGELL NARROWS

This shot was about half way up the Wrangell Narrows channel... It was like Christmas... green and red buoys and markers EVERYWHERE!!!!!!

There are about xxxx (I'll update this later... too tired to remember numbers.... or my name!!!) aids to navigation in the short 20-some mile long Narrows!

WRANGELL
RIck 16040
05/31/2009, S.E. ALASKA

I made the dash to Wrangell to stay the night, but when I called the HarborMaster for dock space, he informed me that the place was FULL... crap! He also mentioned that I have to time the trip up the WRANGELL NARROWS perfect otherwise I could be in trouble with the huge currents. I decided to make a made dash to a small anchorage just sough of the Narrows, but it meant searching for a spot right after sunset. I really lucked out and found a spot and was buttoned up as it got DARK!
