Power Generation
23 June 2010
Bill
One thing that is very evident on Long Island Sound is Power. At any given time, we can see at least 4 power plants from the boat. This is the one in Port Jefferson. It burns oil. the days I was working on the boat in the port, I saw a barge a day come into Port Jefferson and tie up at the power plant. We passed two of these barges, empty, headed into the east River. Maybe they bring the oil from the NJ tank farms.
Out in the middle of the sound, on the CT side near Bridgeport and Fairfield there is a huge ship moored with cranes on it. The Bridgeport power plant burns coal and they are not able to get the huge coal ships in to the plant. So this ship is used as an unloading station, the cranes scooping the coal out of the huge ships and dumping it into "little" barges that take it into Bridgeport.
think of all the energy that is used to move the fuel around. On top of the environmental costs which are now more obvious.
