We started the search by drilling a hole from outside where the leak was entering the inside of the boat. That is the most right hand hole. Then we drilled the lower holes following the water until it dried up. Then we started following a crack up and aft.
If you look closely, you can see the crack continuing up and aft in the top hole.
Forget the hole saw, get out the Fein saw. And we followed the crack further up and aft...
A close up showing the crack a couple inches down from the top. and the material is dry and solid further up and forward...
Then we put a plug in the rudder post shaft log, the bottom of which the girls are pointing to... and filled the log with water... and it leaked into our cavity. Ureka!
We removed the bronze shaft log, which extends through the fiberglass tube to within an inch of the bottom.
This is the inside of the tube that leaked.
Another shot... hard to see the cracks, which we found after we had it out were down in the bottom couple inches.
The bronze log is out and we hope to make another fiberglass tube using the bronze one as a mold...
This photo was shot November 10th right after the "incident". We should have known to look more closely at the rudder shaft log.
This was taken in December, we had just pried the rudder post, which was bent, up enough to remove the rudder. You can see that the bottom couple inches of the fiberglass tube could have been damaged when the post was bent.
