Night watches

17 July 2014 | Underway to French Polynesia
Bill
Bill and Isobel chat on the HF radio during one of our radio nets with other boats heading west.

What do we do during our 5 hour night watches? There is no shipping out here, and yet we check every 20 minutes with a scan of the horizon. We try to keep the boat quiet so the other person can sleep... If I am well rested, I like to read mostly. Sometimes it is nice to just be quiet and look out over the water. We have had a nice moon recently. Lara said the other night she was able to learn some things about photography and her camera that she has been wanting to focus on. I saw her drawing stuff too. I will have to try that one night. It will be interesting, to see we use red headlamps as red light doesn't impact night vision as much as while light... so I wonder what that would do to colors... I will have to find out.

Of course we write in the log book once an hour and check our course, check sail trip, and stop any noise makes such as bottles that may be going "clink" with the roll of the boat...

When you are not rested, you look at the clock a lot, try to take 10 minute cat naps, do all those things that people do to try to stay awake... that is the worse!
