Here is our friend in Hanevave, Simon, who is a wood carver and bone carver. Here he is talking about this huge palm fruit that they make necklaces out of. He uses the wood, which is a wonderful grainy tube to carve things like waves out of. He also uses it to make holders and bases for his other wood carvings.
He was excited that day because a friend had delivered the huge boulder that is in the bottom right of the photo. They used to use stone Mortise and pestle to pound Kava... (outlawed by the missionaries who replaced it with alcohol!!) Kava was a local plant from which them made a special drink used in ceremonies...
Anyway, he will carve a huge mortise and pestle for display in town.
