Arinui 3 arrives
14 August 2014 | Tuhuata
Bill
In preparation for the Tuamotus, we are putting up rat lines so we can climb up the rigging to be able to see coral... Isobel loves the thought of them!
The other night we were anchored here in this tiny quiet bay on the NW coast of Tuhuata, with only one guy living on the shore. As we ate our dinner I saw a light in the distance… I looked at the AIS and saw that it was the Arinue 3! We had not seen it yet! We though they were going to Hiva Oa. As we watched though, by looking at their navigation lights it looked like they were coming straight toward us… I looked again at the AIS… they were coming straight toward us and their range was closing down to 1/2 mile!! yikes, I thought. it is on auto pilot and the man on watch has fallen asleep… they kept coming. We called them on the radio, and then again… no response! we prepared to cut loose our anchor and move out of the way. Finally 1/4 mile away they started to slow, then stopped and dropped their anchor! Yikes! They stayed only a few hours and left again… still haven’t seen them in the daylight…
