The wind shadow

Well, most people when they are heading west to the Isles Sous Le Vent, leave from Opunohu Bay on the north coast of Moorea.
That is because there is a huge wind shadow behind Tahiti and Moorea. We tried to sail and what wind came, switched directions every few minutes. So we set our favorite anti-roll device, the Trys'l and fired up the Beta Marine... which, with the new transmission and the new engine alignment is very smooth!
We had to travel about 15 miles to be in some steady wind... then it was down wind sailing... in rolly seas for 24 hours
