Bock Island to Annapolis
08/20/2012, South River, MD

We just completed Block Island to South River in 48 hours (9am anchor up to 9am anchor down). It seems to be a year for doing the tricky bits at night (because of timing currents). Previously we did the cape cod canal and buzzards bay at night and this passage the C&D canal and then down the bay at night. AIS certainly does make this much easier (one side note - it looks like my new led masthead light produces some radio noise near AIS frequencies and blanks out some of the weaker/more distant AIS signals. The LOPO led deck running lights don't seem to have any AIS effect).

This little bird hitched a ride the whole way. He would fly away for about a minute but always return with a bug in his mouth and then he would settle into a corner on deck and munch the bug. He ate all but the wings and the decks are now covered with abandoned wings.

I love your posts, and this might be my favorite about the little bird!

Similar to last year, we must have arrived (8/20) on Block the day after you left, only last year we left during early morning not knowing that you had arrived at sunset the previous evening.

After having followed the adventures of HAWK for so many years, it seems so bizarre to keep miss seeing her up close and personal.

And, yes, it is true, the Northlies do not seem to want to materalize in this area this season. Although yesterday, after being out and about for a couple of weeks, aboard our CS 36, we had the advantage of following seas, the current and 9-11 kts of wind off the starboard quater, so we made it from Block to our mooring at Shennocossett YC in Groton in just under 3 hours; never done that before. It was a fast fun ride.
