Frederick Sound.

10 July 2013
North of Petersburg the Frederick Sound opens up. We were there in ideal almost flat water conditions to appreciate its raw beauty. Another boat behind us took photos of us under sail ghosting along. Without the engine running a magic thing happened. Suddenly we could hear the whales around us even if we couldn't see them. The blow sounds were coming from as much as four miles away determined by sighting a blow and counting seconds, like after a lightning strike. Sounding flukes made swishing water noises. One whale was breaching and slapping the water miles away, just visible through binocs, and it was all audible. A really lovely experience.
