For You Dad
October 25, 2007, Cascais,Portugal

This photo is for my dad who wanted to know how the dinghy was attached. If you look at the roof of the back deck you will see two arms extending out on either side of the flag. These arms roll in and out, and cables dangle from them with weighted metal cylinders and locking hooks at the end of each to hold ropes attached to the dinghy. During travel, the dinghy is hoisted to a resting position on the platform where you see the two cases (containing the life rafts.) To keep it from swaying while Blaze is in motion, the ropes are wrapped around the roof support posts and cleated to where you see the black dock lines. In the background you can see the castle walls near the Cascais Marina.

2nd Childhood for a bit less-than-older-fogies
October 23, 2007, Sintra, Portugal

We became children for a day at Quinta da Regaleira. The photo tells part of the story. At left Carol emerges from a stream at the end of one of the labyrinth tunnels leading from the bottom of the wishing well. Roy is leaning out over the well from one of the upper floors where the circular stairway begins. This was our second or third time through the labyrinth. The right-hand photo shows one of the elaborate facades used to enter or exit the labyrinth. What a fun adventure!!!

Pena Palace - Lattice and Lace
October 23, 2007, Sintra, Portugal

The Pena Palace, an exquisitely designed and constructed ornament adorning an entire mountain top. Again...we were awestruck at the design and man-years that produced this work of art. The left-hand photo shows the view from a balcony outside the Telescope Room containing multiple forms of star-gazing and distance-viewing instruments. The right-hand photo captures a menacing creature of gigantic proportions...ornate cement work around a bay window that is mounted over an equally creative archway leading through the Palace to the balconies overlooking the valley below.

Us
October 23, 2007, Sintra, Portugal

Here we are, for those who have requested photos of us...Roy and I (Carol) on the Moorish Castle wall overlooking the more modern side of Sintra, while Brendan is captured blending into the architecture.

Zoom to a View
October 23, 2007, Sintra, Portugal

We were awestruck by the views from the Moorish Castle. This composite photo uses the camera's zoom to peer down upon a magical castle at Quinta da Regaleira (about 2 miles away) and the Pena Palace on the next mountaintop (also about 2 miles.) Our next stop would be Pena Palace, to which we walked/climbed (except for Brendan and Kenney, who clung to the back of a shuttle...Roy and I beat them to the top.)

Beautiful Preserved Ancient Cistern
October 23, 2007, Sintra, Portugal

The left side of the composite photo shows two ancient wells that draw water from a cistern below...and the right hand side shows the actual cistern from a small opening in the end at a lower landing...HUGE...a structurally significant example of substantial construction. It is probably 12 feet wide and 25 feet deep...very impressive! There are two people walking behind the wells, upper center, to give perspective.
