10/09/2009, Atlantic Highlands
Today we motor sailed from Norwalk through the East river and past the lower end of Manhatten. We are now at anchor at the Atlantic Hieghhlands, NJ.
As we looked at the chart plotter, this is what we saw! Each little arrow is a ship or a large barge, It is like radar, except that we can tell the name, size, speed, direction, radio call sign of each one. It is called AIS, Automatic Information System. It is wonderful albeit a bit daunting when there are a lot of vessels in one area.
We too have AIS, but it appears to still be broken. GRRRR Raymarine.

We had to lay over in Block today due to strong S. winds. Leaving for Sandy Hook tomorrow - should be there on Sunday but sounds like we will miss you. Fair winds - hopefully we'll catch up at some point.
Sail safe,
Vicky

Jan (Seattle) was the first to notice and first to inquire about the numbers at the bottom of our blog. (Hardly "brain dead" I would say)!
We play a version of Gin Rummey almost every night and the numbers at the bottom of the blog are the running total since we left Edgcomb. We did the same last trip South but did not have the courage to show our card prowess to the world. Well here it is. Hopefully I will not embarasse myself.... being a math major.

See you in Atlantic Highlands!
Hope your AIS re-install went OK,
Vicky
I'm not sure where you are now, or where you'll end up, but might you pass by the NC coast at some point? Chad and I could drive out to meet you. Would love to see you two. Looking forward to tracking your adventures with your blog.
Love, Erica
Jess
