Wine tasting in Napa

Some times a change in plans is the best thing ever. In this case: taking a car with A/C and not a bike to do a wine tour as the weather was still in the lower 100's, and wineries are located on hills. I'm not a kind of person that wears butt padded shorts when I bike, so we'll take that tandem another [...]

Leaving the Delta

We've enjoyed the delta, and were glad we checked it out. For us, September was a good time to go, as it was a quiet during the week, but not so much during the weekend, and we can imagine that the summer can get pretty busy here. It's a place where motor crafts seem to rule, and with that comes a certain [...]

An adventuresome day

Jolanda: Tod wanted to spend some time fishing today, taking the dinghy, so we came up with the plan that we would tow the kayak 2 miles down the river to Paradise Marina, and he would go on his merry way into a more remote slough. Now, 2 miles might not be that much if you walk , however ½ [...]

Eden Island

Down the Potato slough, up the Disappointment slough, you will find Eden Island, a small private island bought by some members of the BYC decades ago (principally motivated by microcomputer designer Adam Osborne) . Steve and Maureen [...]

On the hook in the Delta

Friday 9/24: Time for some fishing and trying the tree tie. Three River Reach came up as a good location to anchor, but luck and weeds were not on our side. We approached from the river, and saw a couple of fishing boats close to shore. Ah, times you wish you had a retractable keel....The center of the [...]

Relaxing on pretty Bethel Island

As we sailed under the Antioch bridge on Wednesday and down the San Joaquin River to go to Bethel island, we both were not immediately warmed up to the scenery. Not much hills left, and surrounded by power lines. However, the moment we went up False River, we were more surrounded by tule, and pretty [...]

Exploring central California coast over land

23 October 2009
As the weather isn't quite cooperative as this time, we decided to bypass San Simeon by water, stay put in Morro Bay for a few days more and rent a car. In hindsight, this was not a bad idea, as our dock neighbors came in late Wednesday afternoon and had experienced 16 feet swells as they motored up.

Thursday we took a bus to San Luis Obispo along HW 1 south to pick up our rental car. We drove by some gorgeous large rocks, in the midst of green hills. By car we continued on HW1, northern direction, and stopped in Cambria to indulge at the Italian bakery (we tried a lot of different things.....), and look at some more art galleries. Next time you visit our boat, you will see our latest purchase, our Bovano glass on enamel copper fish sculpture (if you want to check them out: www.bovano.com).

We took a quick peek at the anchorage of San Simeon where we intended to go, and although it looked lovely, we were glad we were not at anchor in those waves. Right across the street is the entrance of the Hearst Castle, designed by Berkeley Alumni civil engineer and architect Julia Morgan for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst from 1919 until 1947. In 1957 the Hearst Corporation donated the property to the state of California. Since that time it has been maintained as state historic park where the estate and its considerable collection of art and antiques are open for public tours. After a tour, a movie about building the castle, and a great beef ranch sandwich (local, from the ranch), we drove further north along the magnificent, and curly HW1, sometimes in fog.

Today , Friday, a catch-up day for projects/tasks that we intended to do during this trip. Turns out, the fridge decided to stop on our project day, so Tod is making a run to the electronics store and will try to fix this before we go on tomorrow. One more week left of this adventure (we plan to be back on 10/31, weather permitting). Plan is to leave for Monterrey tomorrow, Saturday and make the long (and likely miserable against waves and wind) 20 hrs, 100 nautical mile trip......as is life, it can't be all fun....no need to feel sorry for us though :-)
