Wine tasting in Napa

Some times a change in plans is the best thing ever. In this case: taking a car with A/C and not a bike to do a wine tour as the weather was still in the lower 100's, and wineries are located on hills. I'm not a kind of person that wears butt padded shorts when I bike, so we'll take that tandem another [...]

Leaving the Delta

We've enjoyed the delta, and were glad we checked it out. For us, September was a good time to go, as it was a quiet during the week, but not so much during the weekend, and we can imagine that the summer can get pretty busy here. It's a place where motor crafts seem to rule, and with that comes a certain [...]

An adventuresome day

Jolanda: Tod wanted to spend some time fishing today, taking the dinghy, so we came up with the plan that we would tow the kayak 2 miles down the river to Paradise Marina, and he would go on his merry way into a more remote slough. Now, 2 miles might not be that much if you walk , however ½ [...]

Eden Island

Down the Potato slough, up the Disappointment slough, you will find Eden Island, a small private island bought by some members of the BYC decades ago (principally motivated by microcomputer designer Adam Osborne) . Steve and Maureen [...]

On the hook in the Delta

Friday 9/24: Time for some fishing and trying the tree tie. Three River Reach came up as a good location to anchor, but luck and weeds were not on our side. We approached from the river, and saw a couple of fishing boats close to shore. Ah, times you wish you had a retractable keel....The center of the [...]

Relaxing on pretty Bethel Island

As we sailed under the Antioch bridge on Wednesday and down the San Joaquin River to go to Bethel island, we both were not immediately warmed up to the scenery. Not much hills left, and surrounded by power lines. However, the moment we went up False River, we were more surrounded by tule, and pretty [...]

On to Pittsburg

Jolanda & Tod
Sat 18 Sep: Another day of great sailing: we left Vallejo Yacht Club at 10AM, to sail to our next destination 22 miles south east: Pittsburg. Sailing close to the Benicia bridge, we started to have doubts if we would clear the train bridge. OK, we have to admit, we did a more thorough prep for our coastal cruise last year....we found a 1987 chart in our nav station the night before our departure, and did not really check too carefully where we we're going. As we approached the bridge we were concerned enough that we turned around and sailed upwind for a couple minutes while we both searched our info sources for some reassurance. The trusty chartplotter claimed it had a clearance of 70', so we ventured forward. Surely it looked all fine if you saw us sailing there, but a spare 22 feet doesn't look like much as you look up!
Tod wanted to get a real close-up of the Mothball fleet on the west side of Suisun Bay- plenty of old navy derelicts to look at and get distracted by.....a few minutes later we're outside the channel, and getting into shallow waters. Never a boring moment! Those are times we wish our GPS was a bit bigger than a bread slice size, but the paper chart gave us the big picture view. Plenty of good wind to help us with the detour we had to make to get to the Pittsburg Yacht Club.

Sunday 19 Sep: our spot on the guest dock has a picturesque view. I wish the Dutch Masters had passed on some of their painting skills onto me, as the view and the skies today make for a wonderful painting. A lazy, relaxing day today, with slight rain in the morning. Pittsburg old town has some more work to do on their restoration project that started in 2008. Not the best time to attract new businesses, and home buyers, but we can see that is has potential. We're back in the cruising mode- not much planning ahead, other than what shall we cook/eat for our next meal.

With that picture that Jolanda took saying it look liked one of the "Dutch Masters", Tod thought it would be fun to apply a filter called "Oil Painting" in the photo-shop program that we use.
oil painting of view from PYC dock
He was surpised to see how it was almost the same as the original. Espescially notice that the sky is just about the same.

ink sketch of Bliss at PYC dock
With this picture of Bliss lying at the dock at PYC, we applied a cute filter in our photo program to make it look like an ink sketch... I wish I could do something so elegant by hand!
