A rolling northerly swell surfed us south into the night on a fast and relatively smooth run towards Coffs. Bushfires lit the hills beneath a quarter moon that set early in a glowing red arc to leave a dark oily sea punctuated by spotted lights of civilization on the horizon. All was going well until a cool breeze from the south just before midnight picked up into a stiff southerly swell and the next four hours were spent crashing forward into unseen waves that pitched and rolled the boat. By the time we reached Coffs the swell had exceeded 2.5 meters and we all were glad to be spat from the washing machine into the protective arms of the breakwaters at 4 am. Exhausted, and a little disheartened by the ride we berthed in the first visible empty marina berth and fell into bed unsettled but safe.
