A Storm Blows

23 October 2012 | Coffs Harbour
Wayne
Winds howl and whistle through the rigging whilst lanyards clank to the rhythm of an eccentric and somewhat discordant beat. Waves roll past the outer break walls curling and foaming into the harbour, halted momentarily by the granite boulders of the inner wall, before disintegrating into showers of spray flying skyward to cross the decks of the boats beyond. A lone yacht appears on the horizon beating a hard path into the weather, storm rigging held tentatively like two corners of a frayed handkerchief. Barely in control, it surfs the rolling foaming swells into the apparent safety of the harbour only to be blown mercilessly onto the jagged rocks of the inner break wall pinned in place by the relentless seas. A rescue craft comes scuttling forth to tow the stranded yacht to safety before the hull is smashed.
