Hydra
20 December 2017 | Russian Bay, Poros, Greece
Joni
We stayed in Russian Bay for two more days. We went on shore and cut some branches from a huge pine tree to make a Christmas tree. After lugging them back to Blue Hour on Zoom, we strapped them to the mast to make a very makeshift Christmas tree and decorated it with my origami and Jonas's model boats that he had made out of paper.
The next day, we sailed to Hydra, named after the monster in Greek mythology called Hydra. It had many heads and whenever someone cut of one of its heads, a two new ones would grow. It lived in the region of Argolid near Peloponnesus, which is where we are now. The town of Hydra is very pretty. The buildings are old and it is in the mountains. It was a bit sketchy getting on and off the boat because we were Med moored very far off from the wall because there were rocks sticking out of it. We had to use a long board like a balance beam to get on and off. We went for a hike up a winding road through Hydra and into the mountains. It was pretty because we got a good view of the town nestled in the mountains. In Hydra, cars and bikes are forbidden. The people who live there either walk or use mules. We saw many people riding mules and walked past many small farms on our hike. Like every other place in Greece, there are cats everywhere. I don't think they have owners, but every few meters there was a cat or two. We had made a menorah that was not very proper but worked and we lit all the candles because it was the last night of Hannukah. This morning, we went to a bakery and ate delicious chocolate croissants for breakfast, something we had not had for a long time.
