Christmas
26 December 2017 | Nafplio, Peloponnesus, Greece
Joni
We sailed to Nafplio, because we wanted to be somewhere secure for Christmas. It was a nice place to be for Christmas, since there were a lot of nice shops and snow covered mountains. We did our Christmas food shopping and Mom and I prepared the food. The next morning, which was the twenty-fourth, we went for a walk and followed a marching band for a little while. We walked up to an old Fort and met two stray dogs: a mom and a pup. They were friendly and the pup was cute, so we stayed and played with them for a while. We named them Freddy and Freida. We went back to Blue Hour and did some last-minute preparations for Christmas. We had a Christmas party in the afternoon. We ate the pfeffernüsse cookies (spice cookies) and melomakarona (Greek Christmas cookies with honey and spices) that I made, and drank mulled wine. Then we opened presents. Jonas's favourite presents were a wind-up lamp, a belt, and a game called Ball Maze. Mine were a book of riddles and puzzles, a Greek shawl, and a book called Zorba the Greek. Oma, Opa, Grandma, and Grandpa got me and Jonas some ebooks, which I am looking forward to reading! We ate a Christmas dinner of roast chicken, mashed potatoes, carrots that Mom made and a French walnut Christmas cake that I made for dessert. We also drank eggnog. Then we did carolling. I played some of the songs on my keyboard. We FaceTimed Oma and Opa, as well as my aunt, uncle, and cousins.
The next day, we brought some leftover chicken to Freddy and Freida and played with them a bit. Then we went for a very nice bike ride along the coast of Peloponnisos. We came back and visited Freddy and Freida again, then went back home. We will visit them again today. We learned that there are many stray dogs in Greece and many of them are friendly. They are considered community dogs and people leave out food and water for them. We talked to a local who comes almost every day to see Freddy and Freida, and we met a photographer who went around Greece photographing and documenting stray dogs.
