Carnival
18 February 2018 | Naxos, Greece
Joni
For Valentine’s Day, I baked a heart-shaped cake and we walked to the half-finished temple of Apollo. A few days later it was Carnival which is a Christian festive event that happens the week before Lent. On Friday night, there were festivities unique to Naxos. Mom and I went to the square where there was a play going on about Dionysus, his worshipers, and satyrs (half human, half goat). A huge statue of Dionysus was on the stage as well. There wasn’t a lot of talking, so we understood most of it. The worshipers and the satyrs danced and Dionysus gave a speech about Naxos (it was in Greek, so I didn’t really understand it). On Saturday night, there was a parade that the whole town took part in. Everyone (including us) painted their faces black and white and wore a white sheet that was meant to look like a toga. Then we walked in a large group of about two thousand people all carrying torches and chanting “aaa-oh” through the narrow streets of the city. It was late, so Mom took Jonas and Sirius home and only Dad and I were in the parade. This afternoon, there will be a parade to watch.
