Atlantic City to Sandy Hook and Port Washington NY

02 May 2016 | Port Washington NY
Lousy Cold drizzly 48
We decided at the last minute to head out of Atlantic City, there has been almost a steady barrage of rain cold and wind along the coast of NJ. This is a passage to get over and done with so we saw a window and took it. We left about 230 and ran all night, seas were very calm except for ground swells, it was very thick fog at first but then cleared off, until it started raining again. WE stayed dry inside the surround, and lisa and I took turns on watch. We only made 5.5 knots or so, but by 4:30 a.m. were at an anchorage inside of Sandy Hook NJ where we could get some sleep and wait for the tides to go up the East River in NYC. We awoke at 9 and left about 10a.m., we still had to take our time as the time to leave the Battery was about 1 45 to catch the current through Hells Gate. Again, it was not a pretty day, but made a good run of it and arrived at Port Washington to pick up a town mooring, (free the first 2 nights) and get out for a walk. Went to a pub called Finn Maccools, had a pot roast dinner. Down the street they had a jazz trio, so we stopped there and listened to them for a while. We really like this town. We decided to rest an extra day and did grocery shopping and spent the afternoon in the library (me updating the overdue blogs). WE will leave in the morning for an anchorage in New Haven CT.
