Blue snail II October 2015

21 October 2015
It is a out time for a new blog post! I am blaming the delay on the computer. The truth!

We finally departed Mexico in mid-Sept. The final months were very busy with Frank working long hot days, every day, on the Sprinter conversion. The heat and humidity had increased dramatically. Turned out that this has been the hottest summer on record in San Carlos. Anyway, Frank sure suffered some and went through a lot of water and extra t-shirts!

It wa shard to say "so long" to Mexico. We have so enjoyed our time there and have made many vreat memories and friends. Hopefully, we will get the opportunity to visit again. We will miss our Blue Snail and even our little "casita" that was our temporary home. The geckos and lizards and scorpilns will also be missed. Well, maybe not the scorpions, but everything else we got to know in Mexico.

So, we are out with the Sprinter and just a few parts short of totally liveable status. Currently, we are staying with family in Winnipeg and really enjoying the visit. On our trip north, we made stops in Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Cheyenne before arriving in Manitoba almost a month ago.
Frank is completing the work on the major systems so we can travel west to better weather for the winter.

Over the coming winter we'll work on all the smaller things that still need to be done on the conversion. We expect to leave Winnipeg in the next few days to start our travels and we are excited. For the first time, we will be able to live in our new home....what a new adventure for us!

Looking forward to a great travel year in 2016. Hope to do a better blog later on....all for now and our best to everyone!!

Los Alamos

June 2015

June finds us still happily in San Carlos. Frank is still working on the van conversion of Blue Snail II and it appears that the end is in sight! We will not, however, be departing Mexico on schedule in June as expected…..more like late July or so. (or so?). Anyway, we have no complaints as we get to enjoy Mexico for a little while longer.
We traveled to Los Alamos in April for a 4 day get-a-way. What a fabulous trip! This small colonial town is in the mountains and in the southernmost part of Sonora. We were not able to find much information about the town before we went, so did not know exactly what to expect. What a wonderful surprise is was with lots of restored colonial buildings, houses and churches and beautiful squares. We found it very friendly and safe and not touristy. We had selected the Hotel Colonial for our stay and truly enjoyed it. This 8 room hotel is newly restored and very nice and beautifully cared for by the very gracious hosts. Needless to say, we had a great time in Alamos.
Also in April we experienced our first Semana Santa in San Carlos. Really not much to talk about except for large numbers of folks coming to the beaches and then just cruising the main roads at night. And…lots and lots of beer drinking. Seemed like everyone was having a good time and for the most part avoided trouble.
The new owner of Blue Snail has come to San Carlos a few times since he acquired her and we have enjoyed his visits and the transfer. We are very pleased that we will be able to follow the new adventures of Blue Snail.
Moshe the cat is fine. She has a new “special friend” in the form of a gecko who has taken up residence in our hotel room. We see him most nights but not for the last 2 or 3. Wonder what happened to him?? Again, good thing the cat can’t talk.
Finally, we are planning one more trip to Arizona for the last needed supplies to complete the van. Possibly, and hopefully, with the next blog post, we will be on our way to new and different adventures. More later.

San Carlos Blue Snail Two

April 2015
We are so guilty of not blogging for such a long time....now don't know what to write. Since last November things have been mostly quiet. Still in San Carlos, of course. Cold weather, if you can call it that here, only lasted about 6 weeks around the holidays. Found out later that this winter had been the warmest on record. No complaints about that, of course.
It has been hard watching our friends get their boats ready and proceed south to Puerto Vallarta and beyond to other great places. However, we are not so sad because our wonderful boat Blue Snail has been sold and her new captain is an old friend of Frank's. How great for us to be able to follow her new adventures. This is truly a win for everyone! All of this excitement took place in January and February and it kept us very busy with moving from the boat and re-locating. We are living temporarily in a small hotel next door to the marina. It is very similar to a studio apartment and is rustic, old Mexican. Has everything we need for now, so all is good. We are, however, truly homeless! No boat, no motor home yet....you get the idea. We call our temporary digs our "half-way house".
Frank works daily on the van to motor home conversion and things are coming along nicely. We expect it to be completed by sometime in June. We are very fortunate to have found a storage facility here that is allowing Frank to work on the van. The owner is fantastic and everyone at the facility is watching the conversion with much interest. The work sometimes seems to be going way too slowly and then all of a sudden great progress appears, and we can see the end in sight. Made a trip to AZ a month ago for parts and supplies and will most likely have to go again in May for more. There is always something we need, not available here.
So, in this picture, my primary job, now that we don't have a boat to take care of, is to keep our little temporary home in order and take care of all the day to day things, so all Frank has to do is work on the van. So far, he does not need my help and this system is working out fine.
San Carlos is being improved and has new sidewalks, new bus stops and new flowers and shrubs planted all through town. A large fountain in the center of the roadway shoots water in the air with colored lights and music. Just last week, the fountain music was playing "Under the Boardwalk", in Spanish. I had just left the market where the music in the store was "Unchained Melody", also in Spanish. Quite by accident, we have obtained some random dance music on a CD that actually has "Achey Breakey Heart" on it, in Spanish,, of course. We just love Mexico!!
A word about Moshe the cat. She has adjusted just fine with all of the packing and moving around. We have created a window seat for her at the hotel so she can look outside. An occasional Gecko appears on an inside wall and startles us more than her. So far, she has not caught one or noticed it that we are aware of. She hasn't said if she misses the boat or not. Speaking of cats, I am still feeding the wild cats of B dock for the sanctuary. Have to walk a little more in the morning but that has proven to be a non-issue.
It appears that we have a resident tarantula in our big storage/work locker where the van work is being done. (may have mentioned this before) Frank has seen her on several occasions and says she is gorgeous?? I have not seen her. I personally don't wish her harm and she is welcome to stay as long as she doesn't transfer to the motor home when we leave!!!! Frank has named her "Judy". Don't know why "Judy" or "her", .probably best not to ask.
We are traveling to Los Alamos in April for a 4 day get- away. Have heard great things about this lovely town and so we are looking forward to this break in our routine. Will be traveling by bus as we usually do. So much fun to sit back and enjoy the scenery. Next week is Semana Santa or Holy Week and the biggest holiday of the year in Mexico. We have not ever been in San Carlos for this event but are told things will be crazy with people and traffic. Should be fun.
We PROMISE to write again....

San Carlos Nov 2014

04 November 2014
Blue Snail is still in San Carlos. In September, we were fortunate to have the boat here as the remnants of Hurricane Odile passed by, about 75 miles away. This was the storm that was devastating to Cabo San Lucas and La Paz on the Baja side of Mexico. Winds here in San Carlos were about 35-45 for about 8 hours or so and then quickly subsided. There were no real problems within the marina that we heard of but several anchored and moored boats out in the bahia were blown ashore. All were eventually rescued except for one catamaran that was dashed to bits on the rocks. There was not much rain with this event, so Frank and I walked to the beach close by and took some photos and watched the dramatic surf. It was amazing to see huge rolling waves crashing where usually there are no waves at all. So glad not to be out in that weather! Sadly, this storm also destroyed one of our favorite marinas on the Baja side, at Santa Rosalia. The old marina was always so interesting but had been falling apart for years. Odile finally took it out completely along with a few boats. Very sad indeed.
We spent the entire month of October traveling. The Tufesa bus took us to Phoenix and from there we flew to Winnipeg. Had a very nice visit and stay with Frank's family. Also, and the first purpose of this trip, we picked up our new Sprinter van. This is the vehicle we will be converting to a motor home. With the van finally in hand, we drove back to Mexico. This was a fast trip but a good one with great weather. Strange to be driving after not owning any vehicle for 4 years!
Blue Snail is still for sale and the buying season is just getting started, so we are hoping the right person will come along soon. Frank will be working on the van conversion so that will indeed keep him busy for a few months to come.
This month, actually November 2nd, marks the 4 year anniversary of our departure from Maryland on this fantastic cruise. What a wonderful and adventure loaded time we have had!
More next month.....
