8-16 Mackinaw Bridge, to Duncan Bay Boat Club

16 August 2015
Barbara
8-16 Mackinaw Bridge, to Duncan Bay Boat Club: We left Mackinac Island at 8:15am. It was a bright and sunny morning with no fog. YEAH!!! Our first agenda for the day was to sail under the Mackinaw Bridge. This is one of the items on Bob's bucket list for the summer. The bridge was about six miles from the island and a very pleasant sail. We had both sails up with a motor assist. The wind was not quite right for our approach and we needed the motor to get us there in a timely manner. I took about a million pictures of our approach and passage. Almost immediately after passing under the bridge, the winds increased to 18kn. They must have been whipping around the Lower Peninsula point. We brought in the head sail, came about and went back under the bridge. Almost immediately, the winds became more manageable. AMAZING. We had a glorious sail, sans motor, down the coast. It was probably the best sail we have had this summer. We were doing 5.5-7.8kn. We sailed all the way to Duncan Bay, just past Cheboygan, Michigan. The winds were to increase to 15-20kn. in the afternoon. About 1pm the winds started to increase. About 1pm we were docked at Duncan Bay Boat Club. Our timing was perfect. The winds blew hard all afternoon and did not let up till 7pm. The Boat Club here is about the nicest marina we have been in all summer. They have bicycles and kayaks to use for free. There is a heated pool and a beautiful club house. They offer rides to town and all the boaters have been very friendly. All this for $55.00 per night. It is quite a deal.
