Pancake Creek, via Port Bundaberg.....
15 August 2017
Port Bundaberg was a quick stop, arrived there in the evening, it was fairly industrial, Bundaberg is famous for sugar as well as Rum so the ships come in here to load up, anchored up the river beside the sugar sheds and walked a few miles into Burnett Heads where the nearest shop was, nae McEwan's export to be had funnily enough, but fully loaded up again with scran so I'm good to go.....
Left just before Sunrise in the fog, super eerie and quiet, managed not to bump into any of the sugar ships(try to say that fast!) fog didn't burn off till mid morning then I got some wind, from the wrong direction but better than nothing, getting notherlies at the moment where it should be South Easterly trade winds at this time of year, but we'll take what we can get.
With the wind on the nose I had to tack(zig zag) all day to get to Pancake creek, got here in the dark about 10.30, it's a popular place it seems, when I came round the corner it was like tesco's car park in the inner anchorage, bloody hell! Anchor lights everywhere.... luckily enough there was another spot just inside the bar which was easy to navigate to in the dark, bit tight further up and super shallow, don't want to turn Confidence into a landing craft just yet, turns out this anchorage is a total winner, the area around here is all national park, it's a bit like Cluzean country park, as in it's beside the sea, loads of bush walking, wee wooden signs telling you where to go, nae castle though, but it does have a lighthouse, Queenslands first, built in 1868, had a wander up, there was a little cemetery there that must have been for the lighthouse keepers family's, only one person there was of a decent age, all the others were infants or young folks, there seemed to be a fair bit of drowning going on, but then you realise that back then not many of them would have know how to swim, those folks done it hard......
Early doors again tomorrow, shooting for the Keppel islands.......
