Ha! stole the above from Wiki....
Its a beautiful city and famous for Yoga tourism, particularly the Ashtanga system, western people started coming here in the 60's to learn from the late K. Pattabhi Jois and his Shala in Gokulam is still by far the busiest, his daughter and grandson both teach, Sharath the grandson being the main man these days that they all pour in to see. He is only teaching this year in December and January so heaps more people are going to flood the place in a few weeks time, the season for that school normally runs from October to April so compared to when I was here last year its super quiet, and rather nice.
There are plenty of other just as good schools for all sorts of Yoga here, I also go to a school in Gokulam and my Teacher is a chap named Chidananda, the shala is a wee room upstairs in a house and he only takes 12 students at a time so thats where i spend the first few very sweaty hours of my day which kicks off at 6 which means I'm up around 4.30am 6 days a week, so on that note I'll bid you goodnight as I'm off to my Pit so I don't die a sweaty death in the morning!
The Photo is of the suburb of Gokulam and is taken from the roof terrace of the house I stay in.
