Leg 2, day 1
Jenni
06/02/2012, San Francisco Bay

John, Bob and Justin pulled out of Alameda and were treated to a beautiful break in the fog as they passed under the Golden Gate Bridge and headed S/SW into the open sea

After an amazing, adventurous, sometimes challenging, always exhilarating slide down the coast, Justin & Carissa (our son & daughter-in-law), Gloria (John's mom) and I greeted John and his dad as they motored past Coast Guard Island and into the Alameda Marina!! Vibrant, strong, many pounds lighter and ready for a long hot shower (after the steak dinner, of course), John and Bob told us all about their adventure on Leg 1 of the journey to Hawaii and back.

So glad they're safe & sound & full of life! The next few days before John, Dad and Justin depart for Hawaii will be busy and full of repairs & reprovisioning.

More to come (and photos, too! from Capt John"

Hurray! John called to say they've passed 38' N and NOW it feels like they're really getting somewhere (and also that he's really looking forward to a hot shower in Alameda!)

He fixed Oscar (again...) while harnessed and clipped in, leaning over the back up to his elbow in water when the the bow would slide up a roller. How a guy can repair something underwater and under sail, I'll never know! But it sounds like he has a short-list of repairs when they dock that will be better done from a fixed and stable position. I'll bet!

Day thirteen - rugged night! (0800)

John sounded pretty whipped when he called in this morning - they had another strong system push through last night, more 30-35mph winds with the main not quite reefed down as far as she should've been. "Oscar" had a brace come loose, so John hand steered for several hours in the worst of it, surfing down some of the waves at just under 13mph!

After a few hours of it, they hove-to and rode it out for awhile so John could get a little rest. Wise choice, but he didn't cover as much water overnight as he'd hoped because of it. They're running under just the jib now and scooting right along; John figures they'll make the bay area sometime on the 31st.

Wow! What an adventure, reminds me a little of trucking....Can't control the traffic or the weather and things break. Hoping there are no Dot of the sea's. We are praying for you and know that you are in God's hands. Hoping to see some pictures.
Day twelve - checking in (0830)

Light winds overnight, so not much forward progress, so the boys put the spinnaker up just in time to see some 'weather' on the horizon that will necessitate putting it back down. Winds are supposed to build to a nice, steady 20-25 knots for the remaining 200 or so miles of this part of the journey.
