One of two busses on the island heading for Food Day.

The one really big drawback of coming to this island is the transportation. It hardly exists. You can walk the one 23 mile perimeter road for hours and have no hope of a lift in either direction. I borrowed a bike one day when Patrick went hiking to the top of a volcano. I rode 20 kilometers to and from the main town, called "Government Station", and not one car or truck dusted the road past me the whole time. I assure you...I was moving pretty slowly, especially at the end! Luckily it was all mostly flat, with small hills at best, but it was in blazing, humid hotness. Stop and the flies dive-bombard you. I was almost dead when I returned with fresh bread, completed customs paperwork, and some fresh vegetables from "town". "Town" is a small everything store, the post office, police station, the parade field, first aid station and the little market. Everyone grows their own food here so the market is mostly visited by the few government workers who get a pay check each week.
