Kwajalein atoll
29 September 2012
No one owns a car on Kwajalein but they do own good old style Huffy, Schwinn and Sun bicycles which are now made in China and are quick to rust.
When Brick House was dismasted and we were anchored in the harbor of Majuro, 250 miles to the south east of Kwajalein, in an effort to locate a replacement mast, Rebecca contacted the Kwajalein Yacht Club. Monte Junker, the island dentist, became our first introduction to fellow sailors and wannabe cruisers living and working on the island of Kwajalein. Eventually in our travels after remasting Brick House, we were invited to tie up for two weeks at the Kwajalein, Small Boat Marina. It happened there were job openings. We applied. While cruising the northern “nuked” atolls of the Marshall Islands, our applications were processed. Then we had to terminate our cruise and sail for two days south to get back to Kwajalein. Since mid March of 2012, I have been working as a mechanic on the propulsion systems of ferry boats but also the smaller World War Two landing craft which operate as ferry boats and transports.
