Calauit Safari Park

The Calauit Safari Park, in the NW corner of Busuanga Island, is a whimsy dating back to President Marcos in the 80s.
It's a pretty inlet to get there, and a peaceful remote anchorage. Which was probably the highlight for us.
We found our safari experience somewhat farcical. We paid our 400 pesos entry fee each, and also our vehicle fee of 1000 pesos, complete with guide and driver. Our jeep was a delightfully ramshackle one, and Jack & I hopped in with a feeling of 'this is rather fun'. But our safari journey was all of about 200 - 300 metres. Honestly! We could've walked it in 2 or 3 minutes. First stop was the feeding-the-giraffes gazebo, and from there we were taken to various cages and enclosures nearby. Jack & I got very boring at these enclosures and said, "Oh, we had these where we were living in Hong Kong" each time. By the time we'd said that about the monkeys, small deer, wild boar, terrapins, sea eagles, Burmese pythons and porcupines, our very pleasant guide Roly must've been wondering where abouts we lived in HK - perhaps the HK zoo?
As a wildlife experience I'd have to rate it somewhere between the New Brighton zoo and the Blenheim aviary of my childhood.
Perhaps that's a bit harsh, because you can see giraffe, zebra and antelope grazing across the plain, which is not only very picturesque, but also somewhat bizarre in the context of the Philippines!
