Southbound
10 November 2013 | Cumberland Island, GA
Beverly/cloudy and cool
Well, we finally left Brunswick! We headed out of the marina late in the morning in order to transit the shallow areas around Jekyll Island around high tide. Good thing we did, because there were many places I saw 10 feet on the depth finder (and Georgia has 8 foot tides)! Our boat draws 5 feet, so we definitely would have run aground even before low tide. I was driving (slowly) and it was a nerve-wracking 2 hour shift. Ralph said he was nervous just seeing how tense I was! Anyway, after that section our trip was drama free - always a good thing! We arrived at our anchorage near Plum Orchard plantation on Cumberland Island just before sunset. We even saw one of the wild horses on the way, but it was too far away to photograph. Here's a shot of the anchorage, looking south on the Brickhill River.
