Bruadar

Vessel Name: Bruadar
Vessel Make/Model: Beneteau Oceanis 373
Hailing Port: Liverpool
Crew: Mike & Cathie Hall
About: In 2009 we both turned 50 years of age and embarked on our dream of sailing the Mediterranean. We worked our way from Skiathos, Greece and after a few adventures settled in Marmaris, Turkey before moving to a new marina in Cyprus.
Extra: Our original plans to sail to Spain have changed for numerous reasons and despite having had some wonderful adventures and met some great people we're now going to have to sell our boat and with a bit of luck continue our journeys by road, but thats a good few months away yet

End of an Era

Sadly life has changed forever, Cathie finally lost her fight against cancer on Christmas Day 2012. She'd fought hard but just couldn't beat it this time. To say she will be sadly missed is a massive understatement, the church was packed to the rafters for her funeral so thanks to everyone for their [...]

Floating Caravan For Sale!

Well we're back on the boat in Cyprus despite all the odds! Cathie's coping well the way she has throughout her treatment for breast cancer, but it's meant that we will have to sell our beloved boat!

Quick Visa Run Goes Wrong

We flew back to the UK at the begining of April as our 90 day Turkish visas needed renewing, and crazily it was cheaper jumping on an EasyJet flight to the UK, than getting the ferry over to Rhodes.

Cappadocia

Regular mini bus tours of Turkey are organised locally in Marmaris and we've taken full advantage of this. The latest trip involved a round trip of around 1500 kilometers to the ancient region in cetral Turkey known as Cappadocia. This is a truely facinating place which has been occupied by man for thousands [...]

Istanbul Boat Show

We managed to escape some of the cold weather in the UK by flying back to Turkey on the 3rd January 2011. Fortunately it was a direct flight from Manchester to Dalaman but the pilot had to abort the landing due to a thunder storm and we spent two hours on the tarmac in Rhodes before successfully getting [...]

End of Another Season

Unfortunately our immediate sailing was cut short when we had to fly back to the UK for the funeral of a close friends daughter. Rachie was only young (24 years old), suffered from diabetes and will be sadly missed, but always fondly remembered. A poem that she wrote for us has pride of place on Bruadar: When [...]

Tombs & Ruins

30 July 2010 | Kekova Roads
Hot & humid but thankfully breezy
Hopefully the temperature has now peaked, although surprisingly we seem to have coped pretty well by timing and minimising the use of the oven and maximising the use of the fans.
So far the solar panels have been great keeping the beer cool, the batteries topped up and reducing the need to run the engine.
We've now moved down the coast, passed Marmaris, refuelled and provisioned in Gocek and sailed on down passed Kalkan and Kas before finally settling in a place called Kekova Roads. This is a pleasant stretch of water sheltered by a long island, which has enough anchorages to allow us to swinging free on the anchor and catch the breeze, and it's surprisingly quiet. There are plenty of ruins, rock tombs and sarcophagus scattered around to allow anyone to become totally stoned out which we have!
The wildlife enroute has been good with occasional sightings of dolphins, numerous turtles, one of which seemed totally unbothered as we snorkelled over it in about 3-4 metres of water. There was even a flying fish that landed on deck as we sailed down which Cathie bravely threw back.
We'll probably start to move back up the coast towards Gocek soon, but not before we've had some more chill days, stripped off and soaking up the rays, in between frequent dips in the cool water, as you watch the eagles soaring overhead. Yes trust us, it's really that heavenly, but we know that we've got to move soon as we're running low on new books although we've discovered the talking books on iTunes, so we might be able to last a bit longer!
