Sail Repair Day - What's That? Oh No!

02 May 2012 | Taiohae, Nuka Hiva, French Polynesia
Fixing the big rip was good. But upon closer examination we've got alot more problems with this sail. Damn! It looks like the sail material in certain areas is breaking apart. Where the zig zig stitch hits the sail material at exactly 90 degrees, the material is splitting apart and leaving just the horizontal threads to hold it together. Damn! I can't believe what I'm looking at...but it is confirmed by Rick, the professional in this field. He says to me...Deb, you need a new sail. You're gonna have lots more problems with this one. You need to contact your sailmaker and he should build you a new sail because this one is defective. IT'S ONLY 20 MONTHS OLD! I'm trying not to panic...Karen manages to keep me busy...we put a few more patches on the really bad areas and then we apply sail tape all along the dodgy seams...and it goes all up and down within a few feet of the leach of the sail! We tape and tape until we literally have no more tape. I'm glad I took lots of pictures and I also took a video which shows the extent of the problem. I'll be sending all this to our sailmaker back in the states. He is a very reputable businessman and has been building sails for many years. Hopefully he'll live up to his good reputation now and build us a new sail to take us the rest of the way to New Zealand and Australia.
