Don & Deb's Big Adventure Continues in Oz

Classic Ocean Sail Day

25 June 2014 | 235 miles south of Savu Savu, Fiji
When you think of ocean sailing you think of steady winds, deep blue water, large rolling swells, wispy white clouds. We had all of that today. It was brilliant. First thing this morning the boys hooked into what we think were two very large tuna. The lines went zipping out and there wasn't much they could do. Don started fighting his and the line broke, losing his favorite lure along with the fish. Alan's line went all the way out ending at the knot onto the reel. He slowly worked his way back, bring the fish closer and closer but it repeatedly dove deep (that's why we think it was a tuna). We thought we were getting the upper hand when his line broke too! Bummer. It would have been good to at least layed our eyes on the big buggers. We are now just a few days from Savu Savu where we plan to check in first thing Saturday morning. Late night tomorrow we'll sail past the first of the outer islands. It will be dark so we'll use radar to make sure we don't hit anything. What is it about night time...it plays tricks with your head. Lights seem further away (or closer) than they really are. Sometimes when the boat is flying along at night it feels like it's lifting out of the water; sometimes it sounds like a train powering along. Every so often we hit a wave and water flys over the entire vessel. But if I just sit quietly and look at the water passing by it's not all that scary. It is just water after all. Speaking of water...we've had a water problem on board this trip. Our fresh water pump is not working correctly and needs to be switched out. We've got a spare but it's deep in the v-berth under Alan's bed. We have plenty of water, it's just in the tanks instead of coming out the faucets. Today was a big day. Don used our vacumn to suck the water up to the shower head then turned on the pump and we were able to take showers. Yippee. Living without water hasn't been as much of a trauma as I thought it would be. At least the toilet still works. In my mind that's way more important.
