Today was the 100th anniversary of the Mexican revolution (1910). The town of Cihuatlan had a parade, with townfolk dressed in 1910 period attire and carrying guns. This group was very pleased to have their picture taken.

Night on the plaza in Melaque with Lili
11/13/2010, Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

We spent Saturday night on at the town square in Melaque with our Mexican friend, Lili, and her son, Kenneth. Kenneth and Antoine are about the same age and good buddies. Antoine brought his wooden M-16, and here Lili poses with it.

What do Mexicans do on a weekend night?? They AREN'T watching TV, or hanging in bars, for the most part. Nearly everyone heads to the town square, in towns big or small, to socialize, eat tacos or ice cream or chorros from open air vendors, light firecrackers, and generally have good clean fun. It's something I really admire about Mexican culture, which we don't find or see in the U.S. (or France, or anywhere else we've been, for that matter). It's a really healthy, wholesome environment, offering something for every age group.
