Today I installed and wired in the new battery, it's a 4D deep cycle battery mounted under the bed in the forwaqrd cabin. This battery has its own 150 amp circuit breaker, and it's connected with X00 cables to the main 12v connection at the windlass (at the bow). This battery will serve as an additional battery for the house bank, and also supply high amperage when necessary directly to the windlass. We hope this will solve our windlass problems once and for all.
I shopped for a "battery box" for the 4D battery , but the ones I found were huge (more than six inches bigger than the battery all around). I found the perfect solution in a 13 gallon holding tank, which when you cut the top off, is the perfect size to house a 4D battery.

Here's Calou at the marina at Barra. We're preparing our boat for our travels to Panama, adding a batter to the battery bank and upgrading the connection to the windlass.
We should be ready to leave Barra in about a week, if all goes well.

After a 3 week hiatus in the U.S., we're back aboard CALOU in Barra de Navidad. We brought with us a bunch of boat parts and supplies. First order of business: to work on getting the windlass to run better.
I ordered a new 4D battery (to match the ones we have in the House battery bank) which I plan to install in the forward cabin, as close as possible to the windlass. This should minimize the voltage drop we were getting at the windlass.
Yesterday we drove to Manzanillo in a rented car to do some shopping. We took this photo of a roadside fruit stand along the way.

We're taking a 3 week break from the boat, and are skiing at Incline Village, Nevada. We'll return to Mexico on March 18. In this photo Pascale and Bruce enjoy the view of Lake Tahoe from Diamond Peak.

The French Baker is a real fixture in Barra's cruising community. He delivers freshly baked croissants and baguettes right to your boat via his panga each morning.
When we hear him on the VHF radio, he sounds just like the character "Le Beau" on "Hogan's Heroes".
