I came into La Paz for three days and stayed a week. The plan was to quickly do some sail repair and buy provisions but I kept meeting people so I stayed a week. Yesterday I took Rob and Kim from Keetya 1 for a sail and Kim took this picture. Now it's off on a slow ride to San Carlos, some repairs, Utah and then Costa Rica.

Once again I set off with a short sail in mind but the wind got the better of me. I sailed to Bahia San Gabriel with a variety of winds and had a good time doing sail changes and enjoying the sunshine. There is internet coverage here which is really very cool. This is a large bay and there is just me and one other boat - Bluefin. It has gotten to the point that I can leave the hatches all open at night and soon I should be able to dispense with the comforter. Today will be Tai Chi, paddling and some diving perhaps. :)

The weather called for 14 to 19 knots today and nothing for a few days starting tomorrow so it was time to sail. Soon the wind was blowing a steady 20 with lots of gusts to 25 and a few to 30. Full main and screacher to reduce the apparent wind speed to 12 to 14 and seldom less than 10 knots of boat speed; lots of fun. I had my first close encounter with dolphins while in La Canal de San Jose. About 75 miles in 10 hours which is a pretty good day. A dozen or so came to play while I was doing about 15 knots. They seem to enjoy someone fast to play with but they only stayed a little while.I had planned on one of my regular anchorages but the wind veered to the west just before I got there so I tucked around behind the lagoon on Isla San Jose. Dinner is on and I think it will be an early night.

Another great sail until the wind quit about 2 miles from Puerto Escondido. I spent a few days doing chores; laundry, garbage, banking, groceries, etc. I met up with some old friends, Ed and Cindy aboard Tequila Mockingbird, and some new ones, Dennis and Donna soon to own a Cal 34. Did some Tai Chi etc and just generally relaxed. Life is good.

After the overcast day I was snug in the cabin when the light turned pink. I came outside to this. I hope it comes through okay as all the shots on the blog are low resolution. Even high res really doesn't compare. I took 18 shots and they were all beautiful.

02/03/2012, Sea of Cortez

After a leisurely start to the day I chatted with Kak in New Zealand for a while. The wind was picking up so up came the anchor and off we went with two reefs in the main and the jib up. I was only going about 10 nm but we turned it into 25. We sailed clockwise around Isla Coronados, between Coronados and Isla Carmen and into Puerto Ballandra. It was a good test of the new bob stay and it worked perfectly. I sailed in sustained apparent winds of 15 to 18 knots and the true wind was 18 to 25 for most of the ride. Obviously the wind instrument is working too. I'm tucked in with three other boats and there is lots of room for more. Here's a shot of one from Japan.
