Chemotherapy: 8 of 9

19 November 2014 | Providence Cancer Center - Portland Eastside
Mark / Too Cold!
Chemotherapy: 8 of 9

Wednesday, 19 November was the date of my eighth Chemo infusion, and it's now Thanksgiving Day, 27 November, as I write this post. Even by my standards, this is a very tardy report – my apologies!

As this was an even-numbered infusion, they drew blood for a PSA test. The result was “29.26”, which is virtually identical to the previous test, “29.25”.

Above, you’ll note that I’ve labeled this post as “Chemotherapy: 8 of 9”. That label may, or may not, be accurate. It was originally planned that this course of Chemo would include nine infusions. Some time ago, however, the doctors were so impressed with both the results of the Chemo, and my lack of negative side-effects that they thought we might just let ‘er ride. This meant that I could continue until I’d received not 9, but 12 treatments. With the present PSA stabilizing, I don’t know if this might mean the Chemo is losing its luster. My guess is that we’ll do at least one additional infusion (#10) and look at the PSA then.

In my last post, I told of the difficulties the nurses were having in finding a suitable vein – making five or more stabs at both arms/hands. They told me drinking water beforehand might be helpful. So, this time, I drank more than a quart of water before heading off to the hospital. It worked. The nurse found the vein on the first poke. Nice!

The pattern of post-infusion pain seems to be following form. Again, the infusion was Wednesday, and my pain level was just about "Tip Top", or a "0" on my 0 to 4 pain chart. By Friday evening, there was pain/discomfort in my back, to a "Not So Bad" or level "1". Saturday & Sunday it was bouncing around between "Not So Bad" or level "1" and "Not So Good", or level "2". Monday & Tuesday were not great, either. Even last night, it was “Not so Good” for a couple hours. Thankfully, on Thanksgiving, I’m just about “Tip Top”, again. How’s that for timing?

Shortly, I’ll be joining close friends Kelly & Bob for what I know will be a spectacular Thanksgiving feast. I’m sure it’ll rival that of “Alice’s Restaurant”! Tomorrow, I’ll be at my cousins’ Tom & Cathy’s home for what will be a no less spectacular dinner with family – only this time we’ll have the added benefit of homemade raviolis!

Fortunately, the steroids continue to provide me with an insatiable appetite. Hey, I can’t complain, ‘bout that!

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!!
