Wind giants at sea

09 June 2017 | Anholt, Denmark
Marty/rain and wind overnight then a dry sail
Thursday, June 8, 2017

Photo: The closest windmill in this group of 111 is about a mile away.

Noisy night with all the wind. We were being pushed on the dock we are alongside. Paul put our “hurricane” lines at the bow and stern. These huge lines came with Canty when we bought her. They are not easy to use, are a bit on the short side and have been replaced but not fully retired.

After our part arrives we get underway at 1140. Wind blowing 22-25 knots SSW. Head out of the bay with one reef that we remove after we round the point at Gasehage. The rest of the trip is tacking downwind to Anholt. Anholt is in the middle of the Kattegat halfway between Denmark and Sweden.

To the SW of Anholt is the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm –Denmark’s largest windfarm. It is also one of Europe’s largest covering 88 square kilometers.

We tied up at Anholt at 1955. Max wind 32.4 knots. Max speed 12 knots—we were surfing! Not many boats in the harbor and most are tied up alongside. They have recently installed stern moorings to better accommodate the large number of boats. There are places for 250 boats. It must be very tight quarters in the summer. Rain resumes about 2100.
